Second Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division (Lancers) deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Spring of 2012, as the surge crested. They immediately assumed control of an area of operations in Kandahar Province, the main effort of the war.

The United States Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets because of their distinctive service headgear, are a special operations force tasked with five primary missions: unconventional warfare (the original and most important mission of Special Forces), foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, and counter-terrorism.

The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, known as Task Force Fury, deployed to Southern Afghanistan's Kandahar Province beginning in January 2012. Relieving the 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division's Task Force Spartan in Zharay and Maiwand Districts, Task Force Fury assumed the role of Regional Command South's main effort in March of 2012.
